Biography
Dr. Stefan Holubar is a Professor of Surgery and colorectal surgeon specializing in IBD surgery and surgical outcomes research. He received his MD from the University of Vermont in 2002, completed General Surgery training at North Shore–LIJ, earned a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research, and completed Colorectal Surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester (2007–2010). He subsequently served as Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center before joining a major academic medical center in 2017, where he has led IBD Surgery and research programs.
Nationally, Dr. Holubar co-leads the ACS NSQIP IBD Collaborative and has served as Chair of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) IBD Committee (2023–2025). He is Principal Investigator of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's longitudinal surgical cohort, IBD-SIRCQ. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications and 225+ focused on IBD, he is among the most productive surgical IBD researchers in North America.
Dr. Holubar's clinical and research focus is surgery for IBD and artificial intelligence, with special interest in redo IPAA and perianal Crohn's disease. Recent contributions include Twisted Pouch Syndrome, the Pouch Tortuosity Index, the Mesenteric Excision and Exclusion procedure, and 3D Pouchography. He has developed multiple clinical AI platforms including IBDology.org, Pouchy.org, Pouchology.org, and founded the iPouch Consortium.
